Splitting a billet of green ash or cherry and carving a single-piece canoe paddle by hand — riving along the grain, shaping a subtly cambered blade with a raised centre spine, thinning the edges to a clean foil, and balancing the swing weight against the grip so the blade slices instead of flutters. The payoff is a paddle whose shape actively helps the correction strokes it's built for.
