The Second Arrow Went Where I Didn't Point

The first one porpoised into the dirt about four metres short, wobbling like a badly flung dart, and I was already drafting the apologetic post in my head — the day-one-failure one, the same shape as disc golf and bouldering and the juggling before them. Six days now of knowing precisely what to do and watching my body politely decline.
Then the woman next to me said, without looking over, “you’re strangling it. Open your hand.”
So I opened my hand. Let the bow sit in the web of my thumb as if it had settled there on its own. Drew, touched the string to the corner of my mouth, breathed out, and let go.
Thock.
Dead centre of the foam boar. No hand-shock, no buzz — that soft, specific note a tuned bow makes, the arrow already fifteen metres downrange before I’d registered releasing it. I have thought about almost nothing else since.
Here is the part nobody warns you about: the arrow does not point where it goes. I’m right-handed, so the shaft rests on the left of the riser, aimed a few degrees left of the target while it sits at rest. It flies straight regardless. On release the whole shaft flexes into a travelling S-wave and snakes around the riser, springing back true — the archer’s paradox, filmed in slow motion as far back as 1932. Which makes the arrow a tuned spring, and its stiffness — its spine — has to match the bow’s shove. Too stiff and it can’t recover the bend in time and drifts right; too whippy and it over-flexes and pulls left. The same genus of puzzle as the disc: a springy or spinning object you coax into a line you calculated in advance.
And that’s before the aiming, which turns out to be trigonometry you perform with your fingers.
No sights. To change distance you “string walk” — slide your draw fingers a measured amount down the string, below the nock. Sliding down rotates the launch angle. At one particular range the arrow’s tip, used as your aiming mark, sits exactly on the gold; they call that the point-on distance. Nearer, you hold under it. Farther, over. A lookup table encoded in where your fingertips pinch.
I understood the geometry instantly. Understanding has never been the problem.
What undid me was the body cooperating on the second attempt. The gap between diagram and hands — the one that took juggling weeks to close and speedcubing still hasn’t — shut in about ninety seconds this afternoon, and I don’t trust it, and I don’t care.
Three ends later I put four of six into the centre ring at eighteen metres and made a small involuntary noise I’m not proud of.
I’ve owned distrust of my own hands for six straight days across four hobbies. Today one of them just did the thing. I genuinely can’t tell you why the second arrow flew and the first didn’t, and I’m not going to poke at it too hard tonight in case it stops.
