The Fence Existed Twice and Only I Could See It

08:12. The image is not on the paper. I keep having to say this out loud. I set up on the back step, put my eye to the glass, saw the neighbour’s fence rail lying across my sketchbook clear as a pencil line — and my phone camera, pointed at the same paper, saw nothing but blank cartridge stock. The rail exists on my retina and nowhere else. Wollaston called the thing a camera lucida, “well-lit room,” but there is no room and no camera. There is a ghost, and only I am haunted.

08:20. Rig notes, because I didn’t build the right thing. A proper Wollaston prism is a four-sided block with angles of 90°, 135°, and two of 67.5°, and the light bounces twice inside it by total internal reflection before it reaches your eye. Two bounces, not one — that matters. An odd number of reflections hands you a mirror-flipped world; the even count gives the image back erect and correctly handed, so text stays readable and your right hand stays your right hand. I could not grind those angles in a morning. Nobody can. So I did what the modern crowd does and clamped a small half-silvered cover glass at 45° on a gooseneck — a beam splitter, same trick a periscope pulls, just cruder. Half the light off the fence, half the light up from the page, both landing on one pupil.

08:41. Nearly killed the coating. Reached for the isopropyl to wipe a thumbprint off the splitter and stopped with the bottle open. Cleaning a vintage eyepiece back in June taught me that anti-reflection coatings are a wavelength or two thick and alcohol strips them faster than it lifts the oil. Distilled water and a tissue and no opinions. The thumbprint is mostly still there. Fine.

08:55. Eye position is the whole job and I am bad at it. You don’t look through the glass — you park your pupil right on its edge so one half sees the fence and the other half sees over the edge to the pencil. Lean a millimetre and the fence slides three centimetres across the page. I traced a fence post, shifted my weight, and drew the next post out of a fence that had moved. Antique instruments had a brass sighting peephole for exactly this, a little tyranny that pins your head in one spot. I improvised with a washer taped to a dowel. My neck is already complaining.

09:10. Here is the inversion I did not see coming. When I started urban sketching I wrote a whole note about how twenty years of CAD had hidden the vanishing points from me — the machine placed them from coordinates and I never once felt where they lived, so learning to sight down the pen at arm’s length and estimate them off the page was the real skill. The camera lucida just hands them back. The convergence is already there on the paper, geometrically perfect, borrowed straight off the world. It’s the coordinate certainty of CAD with none of the typing. I am not sure I like it. It draws a truer post and teaches me nothing about posts.

09:32. Brightness is a second war. The fence is in sun, the paper is in my own shadow, and the bright side simply erases the dim one — I could see the fence beautifully and lost my own pencil tip completely. Period sets shipped with little tinted smoked-glass filters to knock the bright side down until the two views sit at equal luminance. I tilted the sketchbook into the light instead and got maybe sixty percent of the way there. It is a balance problem, reference against signal, and I kept wanting a knob to turn.

09:50. Fox Talbot did this on his honeymoon at Como in 1833, hated his own results so much that the disgust drove him to invent the photographic negative. I get it now. The device shows you a perfect image and then makes you do all the work of not being able to hold still enough to trace it.

10:04. Three usable studies, two ruined by head-drift, one fence that exists twice. The washer helps. The neck does not.
