The plant tag gave one instruction and it was a prohibition: use only distilled or rainwater, never tap. Every other houseplant I have ever owned came with a list of things to give it. This one came with a list of things to withhold. So the whole first day turned into a chemistry problem I already had the instrument for — a cheap TDS meter that normally lives beside the espresso machine, keeping scale out of the boiler.

Let me explain why the water rule is not fussiness. It is the single mechanism that kills most flytraps, and it is worth understanding rather than obeying.

What the meter is actually reading

A TDS meter does not measure “dissolved solids.” It measures electrical conductivity and multiplies by a fudge factor. Deionized water is a near-perfect insulator; dissolve calcium and magnesium salts into it and the ions carry current. The meter reads conductivity in microsiemens and converts to ppm using a factor — commonly 0.5 (the “NaCl scale”) or 0.7 (the “442” scale). That matters: the same water reads 250 ppm on one meter and 350 on another. So when a grower says “keep it under 50 ppm,” they mean roughly under 100 µS/cm, and the specific number is meter-dependent. My tap in Alberta runs about 180 ppm. Rainwater off the roof, caught mid-storm, reads single digits.

Why the pot is an ion trap

Here is the part that turns a guideline into a law. Sphagnum peat — the same peat that goes into a sealed terrarium with charcoal and perlite — has an enormous cation exchange capacity (CEC), on the order of 100–200 milliequivalents per 100 grams. The peat’s carboxyl groups are studded with negative sites that grab positive ions and hold them.

Water a normal plant in ordinary soil and the minerals mostly flow through. Water a peat pot with hard tap water and the Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ do not flow through — they get captured at the exchange sites and stay. Every watering deposits a little more. The counterintuitive consequence:

Flushing a carnivorous plant with tap water to “rinse the salts out” does the opposite. You are loading the exchange sites, not clearing them.

The roots, evolved for a nutrient-poor bog, meet a substrate slowly turning saline and mineral-rich — the one condition they have no tolerance for. The plant browns from the growing point over weeks, and because the cause was delivered in small doses, it never looks like a single event.

The tray method, done properly

The delivery system that keeps ppm low is embarrassingly simple. You bottom-water. Stand the pot in a saucer holding 1–2 cm of pure water and let capillary action wick it up.

A working recipe for the mix: roughly two parts sphagnum peat to one part perlite (or coarse silica sand), by volume. No lime — peat is sold both limed for vegetables and unlimed; you want unlimed, and the bag will say. No fertilizer, ever, in the soil. Rinse the perlite first: it ships dusty and, more importantly, some brands carry a mineral load that will spike your carefully-low tray. Rinse the silica sand until the runoff reads clean on the meter. Then let the pot sit in its tray of near-zero-ppm water and top the tray up when it runs dry, rather than pouring from above.

That is the entire hydrological discipline. The plant does the rest: it manufactures its own nitrogen and phosphorus by catching insects, precisely because the substrate you built it offers none.

I set the pot in its saucer, filled the tray to the first knuckle with rainwater, and checked it with the meter out of the same reflex that checks the espresso jug — 8 ppm. The flytrap did nothing dramatic in response. It is not a plant that rewards you on the first afternoon. But for the first time I have pointed a habit I already owned at something that will, if I get the chemistry right, still be alive to poke next spring.
