hobby #46
Mechanical Weather Vane Instruments
Design and build kinetic weather vanes with mechanical readouts that translate wind direction and speed into visible dial movements. Combines the escapement and gear-train knowledge from orrery work with aviation weather theory, using 3D-printed housings, brass bearings, and counterweighted vanes. Each instrument encodes Beaufort scale thresholds into physical stops and click detents, producing a desk-sized weather station that reads wind the way a pilot thinks about it.

Mechanical Weather Vane InstrumentsPerfect day to build a device that measures exactly what I'm already annoyed by.
