Smoke-Streak Wind Tunnel Flow Visualization

Building a small open-circuit desktop wind tunnel — honeycomb flow straightener, contraction cone, a variable-speed fan, and a rake of fine smoke streamers — to make the invisible air over a hand-shaped model wing visible. Tuning the tunnel for laminar flow, then photographing streamlines detaching into stall, vortices shedding off wingtips, and the wake behind aerofoils at varying angles of attack.

Fifteen Degrees I Finally Watched the Air Give Up

I've felt the stall through a yoke for twenty years and never trusted it. So I built a box to make the air confess — and it did, at exactly fifteen degrees.
