Zero Sixty-Millimetre of Wood That Holds Nothing Up

I didn’t buy it — I bought a receipt with one word written on the back, and three days later a small stack of veneers thin enough to read a newspaper through. Wednesday coffee has gone cold beside me while I sort them by colour and try to work out why this one snagged so hard.
Here is the thing I keep circling. Back in April, hollowing a birch spoon, I learned that the grain runs one way and so must the knife — wood is anisotropic, the fibres dictate the cut, and your job is to read them, not argue. Marquetry takes that same fact and turns it completely sideways. The veneer is 0.6 mm thick. It holds nothing up. It bears no load, resists no torque. All that structural anisotropy I spent a week respecting is suddenly demoted to decoration — grain as pigment. Cut a single walnut burl one way and it reads as storm cloud; rotate the same offcut ninety degrees and it reads as riverbank. One board, two materials, and the only difference is which way the light rakes across the fibres.
So the woodworking I’ve done splits cleaner than I thought. Spoon carving and kumiko read or obey the grain as engineering. Marquetry uses the identical property as palette. Same anisotropy, and I’d been treating it as one idea wearing one coat.
What actually stopped me at the window was the shading. The old squares had a scorched gradient along one edge, and the answer — hot sand, roughly 180 to 200°C, dip the edge and count — is the kind of detail I can’t leave alone. It’s a knob. Heat and dwell time, two variables, a smooth ramp from honey to walnut to char. A technical person hears “controllable gradient” and immediately wants a thermocouple in the sand tray. The catch, and I suspect it’s the whole education, is that the ramp only goes one way. Overshoot and there’s no dialling it back. You’ve made charcoal, and charcoal doesn’t un-burn.
There’s a chess residue in this too, and not the obvious games-board kind. Several methods build the picture face-down, mirror-reversed, and you cut the hole to fit the piece — which means half the attention goes to the empty shape, the negative space, the square you’re not putting anything in. Thirty thousand-odd games taught me to look at the square my opponent wants as hard as the one my piece sits on. I did not expect that habit to be transferable to gluing bits of maple to a board.
None of this is a lesson yet. I’ve cut exactly zero pieces. But I’ve noticed that half the crafts in this collection turn out to be the same anisotropy problem in different clothing, and I’m no longer sure that’s a coincidence.
